BENCH PRESS

The aim of Bench Press testing is commonly to test overall upper body strength and endurance

TESTING FORMAT

  • The bench-press test will be performed by Junior and Senior TEs, LBs and linemen only.
  • THIS EVENT IS OPTIONAL
  • Warm up at 135 lb bench or pushups if desired
  • The bench test will take place with 185 lbs
  • The bar is grasped at approximately 6 inches wider than shoulder-width.
  • Keep both feet on the ground
  • Keep buttocks on the bench.
  • Fully extend arms on every repetition.
  • DO NOT bounce the bar off chest. Use smooth and controlled motion
  • Players may spot the testing athlete if event staff is not available
  • The event tester counts the player’s repetitions until failure
  • Total number of repetitions is recorded, minus deducted repetitions, if any.

 

DISQUALIFYING FACTORS

  • Fouls with technique will result in the deduction of a repetition such as short-arming the repetition or bouncing the bar off the chest.

 

FUN FACT

  • In pre-season draft testing combines, the NBA uses 185 lbs., the NHL uses 150 lbs., and the NFL uses 225 lbs.
